Laser Usage by Dental Hygienists

The Wisconsin Dentistry Examining Board (DEB) wrote a position paper on adding Lasers to the Dental Hygiene Scope of Practice. Testimony has been offered and reviewed, widespread support and consensus was established and in the Spring of 2012 it was approved by the DEB.

Hygienists interested in using lasers must first take a hands-on course. A lecture format with no hands-on is not acceptable. This course cannot be offered by your employer but must be from an outside entity.

After completing the course and receiving your certificate you can then utilize lasers in conjunction with scaling and root planing. Lasers cannot be used by hygienists for apthous ulcers or any other procedure while practicing in the State of Wisconsin.
